We’re planning a trip to Africa next year. Our trip will end with 3 days on a beach resort in Zanzibar. Seems like most of the fishing over there is deep water and not sure I want to necessarily book a guided trip but contemplating taking my travel 8wt and do some messing around on the beach (assuming is allowed). Figured I’d take a small box of generic flies like clousers, some baitfish and shrimp pattens and see what I come across. Any thoughts or recommendations?
Looked on Google Earth and the beach looks like a giant flat that has a sharp drop off into the blue.
Mnemba island atoll to the northeast has GT, and all the Indian Ocean assorted species. So I would say, there are Jacks and Guts where you plan on wading. Have usaf friends that fished that island and did well, they. Got a guide for a couple days though.
I’m not dead set against hiring a guide. But I was thinking more of just dinking around and seeing what shows up on the surf. It’s not really a fishing trip and I don’t wanna turn it into one, but if I can get in a few hours here and there I’d be happy with that. But anything that cruises the surf that’s willing to eat a fly I’d be more than happy with. I will look into the area you mentioned. Thanks for the nod. I figured you’d have some input on this!
You may want to consider getting a day inland to go after Tigerfish. You can get GTs in different parts of the world, but not Tigers. I went to Africa and Egypt back in 2021 and regret not going after them, but travel was tough due to logistics still being a mess from the pandemic, so I brushed off trying to make it happen.
I definitely agree with the Tiger fish. One of my good friends is from Zim and his dad owns a large safari out there and does a ton of Tiger fishing. The pictures and stories are incredible
