Annual service price

Hey guys,

For those non-DIYers, what are you paying for an annual/100 service on your outboard? I have a Yamaha F40 4 stroke and spent about $200 in parts and 3.5 hours labor @ $130/hour for a total of $655. I love my mechanic, and he certainly does a professional job. Not unreasonable IMO to spend once a year to keep me up and running; how do these prices compare to what you spend?

Total bill for my last 100hr on a 50 Tohatsu was $1k. At least I didn’t get my hands greasy…

I guess I need to start offering 100hr Tohatsu maintenance…that is wild.

I’d probably drive to you for a $1000 100hr maintenance, take you to eat a steak dinner and tell you stories about the good old days…:rofl:

Dude please don’t pay that. It’s less than a 30 minute job and less than $100 in parts and fluids

I can look but $400 seems right for my Tohatsu 60.

I take that back, $594 but that price went up. Maybe that’s why I did my fluids last time.

  • Install Water Pump Impeller

  • Check Power Trim & Fluid

  • Check Cooling System & Hoses

  • Remove Propeller, Inspect Seals, Lubricate Shaft

  • Inspect Shift & Throttle Cables

  • Check Bolts Throughout Motor

  • Check Compression

  • Change Lower Unit Oil

  • Install New Engine Fuel Filter (if needed)

  • Inspect Carburetor & Adjust

  • Inspect or Change Thermostats (if needed)

  • Change Oil & Oil Filter (4 Strokes)

  • Inspect Oil Level & Hoses (Direct Inject 2 stroke)

  • Check Electrical System

  • Replace Spark Plugs

  • Replace or Clean Exterior Anodes

Wherever you took it do not go back there. I’ve seen it around $600 to $700, but $1k is too damn much. The engine is only $6k. Imagine $1k for everyone 100 hours up to 600 hours.

There are inspection items, but mainly it is engine oil and plugs. Lower unit and T&T oil can be topped off. They do not need to be replaced IMO.

Even $600 is too much for 100 hours. 200 hours with impeller, sure, I can see $500 to $600. It’s the labor charges that are adding up. And you would think an “expert” would be able to do things more quickly than they charge for.

Not meaning to pick on you @Will - sorry that happened man. I’ve been taken twice on my boats for service by different dealers. But it drove me to learn how to do most stuff myself.

As far as charges go, do marine repair shops go by a “book” or printed schedule of charges? I know a lot of mechanics who charge book prices vs charging actual time and labor. This makes a big difference.

I did my 100hr service on my Zuke 90 in 2hrs for $248. That included the impeller/housing, spark plugs, fuel filter, fuel water separator, oil filter, anodes and various gaskets. I already had lower unit fluid.

Pro tip here. Make a wooden box with some 2x4s across the top. After removing the lower unit, place the skeg between the 2x4s and slightly lean it forward against a wall. It’s upright and you can access the impeller housing with ease.

$1K is a lot. I think I may have a side gig when I retire in 8 years!

Just got mine done. Yearly so just the oil and filter change. Was $575. Whatever it takes to keep her in tip top shape!

Man these are $$$ for sub 90 horse motors.. it’s really easy to do on your own and doesn’t take much time. My F25 costs me less than $150/service and that’s including a full water pump kit.

I like doing my own maintenance, it gives me a chance to really closely inspect the engine. I guarantee you I inspect it better than most mechanics will. Cost me less than $200 to service on my 115 Merc with a water pump. Just shy of 500 hrs on my 2023.
